The landscape for wedding bands in South Wales has changed a lot in the time I have been active. When I started, the bigger function band was popular with several Soul Bands and large groups on the circuit. In the past 8 to 10 years there has been a big influx of 4 and 5 piece bands, some all live and some using tracks, these have proven very popular because they offer a big sound and a lot of variety with fewer musicians, so a lower price.
Prior to creating Dave Mitchell Music I worked with two bands, the Classic Soul Dogs and Pelican Groove. We introduced Pelican Groove in 2012 as a way of picking up the business that didn’t want to pay for the full size band. I have continued this idea of having the two bands (Dave Mitchell Soul Band and Funk Soul Brothers).
There has also been a rise in the number of agencies active in the area. Agencies can dominate and make it very difficult for independent bands to get seen, particularly on Google, but it is manageable and with a good marketing strategy you can get yourself on that important first page of Google.
With so many bands available it’s important to define yourself so your customer base knows why to pick you. It’d very easy to look at other successful bands and try to emulate them in look or sound. What we should be doing is identifying our strengths and push that forward. For us it’s the quality of our musicians and the collective experience we have. In our hands you know you are going to get a professional experience and a top quality performance. We believe that is our strength.
